New & Upgraded Zone 1 tube stations opening in Vauxhall Nine Elms

Kennington is upgraded to zone 1, and The new Northern Line Extension (NLE) is due to open in autumn 2021, offering 2 new zone 1 tube stations.

Kennington tube station has been rezoned, with the change seeing it go from being a Zone 2 station to Zone 1/2. This means that a single fare to central London will be reduced to just £2.40, making all tube stations in the Vauxhall Nine Elms area part of Zone 1.

The move comes as part of Transport for London’s preparations to open its extension to the Northern Line later this year, with 2 new zone 1 tube stations: Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station.

The Northern Line Extension project includes a twin-tunnelled extension from Kennington station to the 2 new stations, which are due for completion later this year.

The project is the first major Tube extension this century and will transform transport links in south London. Battersea and surrounding areas will be brought within 15 minutes of the West End and the City, helping reduce carbon and improve air quality by providing more sustainable transport options.

TfL has been running test trains through the line’s extension since Christmas and says it expects to “move into the trial operations phase” in the summer.

According to the Evening Standard, work on the new escalators and lifts for the new stations will also be completed in the coming weeks, and public areas around the new stations are being completed with work on new walking and cycling access through the railway arch by Nine Elms station.
